José Fredy Rodriguez placed first place with this lot in the 2021 Copa de Occidente, a regional competition for coffee producers in central and western Huila, Colombia. Over forty producers submitted coffee to the competition, which was organized by Osito Coffee and judged by a panel of international roasters and coffee buyers. We had the privilege of being one of the judges, which gave us the opportunity to taste every lot in the contest.

Over three days of tasting we progressively narrowed the field, first to the top twenty, then to the final ten. In every single round, José Fredy’s coffee was an unmistakable standout among the crowd. All of the lots were unique and many of them were very good, but nothing compared to the brilliance of the one that took the top prize.

Humble on paper, the winning lot is of the typical Variedad Colombia, a common cultivar among small farmers in the country from which it takes its name. José Fredy picks the coffee at peak ripeness and ferments it in cherry for 36 hours in a tightly sealed plastic barrel to limit ambient oxygen activity during fermentation. He then depulps the seeds and ferments again for another 24 hours before washing with fresh water in the same barrel. The clean parchment is then dried on a covered raised platform. The cup is sweet and vibrant with complex fruits dominated by cranberry, tart cherry, and a creamy mouthfeel.

This is our first year buying from José Fredy Rodriguez. We tasted this coffee on the judging panel of Osito Coffee’s 2021 Copa de Occidente competition in Huila, Colombia, where it took first place. We scored this lot 89 points and purchased 1 20kg bag for $11.15/lb EXW. All of the competition entries were guaranteed to be sold for fixed prices above market level, with additional premiums for the top ten.
