La Pirámide is produced by a group of around 300 smallholding farmers in the remote town of Inzá in Cauca, Colombia. Farmers deliver their cleaned and dried seeds to a local purchasing warehouse (or bodega) operated by our sourcing partner Caravela Coffee, who grade and score each delivery. Producers receive immediate feedback on their harvest, and are paid premium prices based on quality scores. Multiple lots will be grouped together by quality and cup profile and sold under the "La Pirámide" community banner.
Inzá farmers used to sell their coffee to intermediaries who blended and sold it as coming from the neighboring region of Huila because it would fetch them a premium price. In 2003 Caravela started working directly with producers in Inzá, bringing these distinctive coffees to the market as single-origin offerings with transparency and traceability. The quality of this year’s crop is outstanding - we’re tasting juicy flavors of apple cider and orange with milk chocolate and honey sweetness.
This is our fourth year buying La Pirámide through Caravela Coffee. We wrote a forward contract last August to purchase 15 bags split between two lots. We scored this lot 87.5 points and purchased 5 70kg bags for $4.40/lb EXW on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.18/lb.
