Libardo Ortiz grows a wide range of varieties at his farm, from typical high yield crops like Caturra, Catuai, V. Colombia, and Castillo to “exotics” like Pink Bourbon, Gesha, and Chiroso. We bought a little of each in the latter group this year, our first working with Libardo through the introduction of our sourcing partners at Osito Coffee. At his farm, Finca la Cabaña, Libardo uses a two-step washed fermentation process. He begins by fermenting whole cherries in a sealed, limited-oxygen environment for 24 hours, then de-pulps the seeds and ferments them again in open air tanks for another 40 hours. The result is a densely sweet and fruity cup, with a slightly savory element for an additional layer of delicious complexity.

This lot is a Gesha, a highly lauded variety that is valued for its fruited and often floral profiles. We think it leans more into the ripe and tropical end of the spectrum, and tastes like lychee, raspberry, and orange.

This is our first year buying from Libardo Ortiz. We scored this lot 87.25 points and purchased 2 70kg bags for $9.95/lb FOT on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.85/lb.
