Robert Pillimue's farm, Finca La Reforma, is located in Páez, Cauca, Colombia. It is almost visible from the nearest town of La Plata in the neighboring department of Huila, directly across the dramatic Cañon de Páez. We met Robert in La Plata late last year at a competition among coffee producers from western and central Huila. Out of 42 entrants in the Copa Occidente (Western Cup), Robert was the only one from Cauca. Despite being geographically very close, the rugged terrain of the canyon and the lack of direct connecting roads result in a two-hour drive to reach Robert's remote farm from La Plata.
When we were first introduced to Robert Pillimue's coffee in October we bought two lots: one large field blend of Castillo and Colombia varieties, which we recently finished roasting, and a smaller lot of his Gesha variety. Gesha, as some will already know, is a highly desired and valuable coffee variety known for its unique floral, citrus, tropical fruit, and tea-like flavor profile. It's quite difficult to grow, and the best examples tend to be competition winning coffees that fetch luxury prices.
Finding any Gesha on the market at all used to be a tough task, but recently it has become more abundant. Attracted by the demand and prices, many small growers in Latin America have planted Gesha on their farms over the years, hoping for high returns. Not every crop will reach its highest potential, so we are now starting to see a wealth of Gesha offerings that are excellent specialty coffees, but not the competition quality the variety is known for. Robert Pillimue's Gesha falls into this category. It exhibits the core intrinsic flavors and qualities we expect from the variety with floral, tea, and milk chocolate notes, and a citric acidity. It also lands at an affordable final price point, widening the audience for this interesting variety to include folks it normally won't reach. We plan to continue investing in Robert Pillimue's whole farm output, and look forward to seeing how the quality of his Gesha develops in the years to come.
This is our first year buying from Robert Pillimue. Our friend Kyle Bellinger at Osito Coffee offered us this coffee which he quoted at 87 pts, and in a rare move bought it sight unseen. We purchased 3 70kg bags for $5.45/lb EXW, on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $2.01/lb.
