Colombia José Flores is our first single origin release from the Antioquia region of northern Colombia, a remote part of the country that doesn't see nearly as much specialty coffee make it to market as the country's better known southern departments. This lot is in our hands thanks to a new relationship we've built over the last year with Juan Carlos Arango, whose family has been growing and trading coffee in Antioquia for generations. His company, Arango Specialty Coffee, does the difficult groundwork to source great coffees from the many smallholders scattered among the isolated mountains, analyze and separate the lots by quality, and pay premium prices. They continue the work by handling all export, import, and sales for these unique coffees, making them a fully vertically integrated and transparent family-owned sourcing company specializing in Antioquia, and one we're proud to work with.

We've tasted a lot of samples from Arango over the last year, and José Flores' lot checked every box for us. His coffee is 100% Chiroso, an uncommon variety that's a mutation of Caturra originating in Urrao, Antioquia. The flavor of this coffee is unique, giving us an unusual note of candy corn alongside comforting date and dark chocolate, punctuated with a crisp kiwi acidity. José Flores produced 6 70kg bags and we were able to pick up the whole lot.

This is our first year buying coffee from José Flores, and our second year buying from the Antioquia region through Arango Specialty Coffee. We scored this lot 87 points based on an offer sample from origin and purchased 6 70kg bags for $4.75/lb FOT, on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.07/lb.
