José Martinez Guzman grew up on a coffee farm owned by his parents, and he learned everything about the trade from them. In his young adulthood he set out on his own, leaving the farm to work as a bus driver, traveling all over Colombia. Over a decade later he felt the pull to return to his roots and purchased his parents' farm, continuing and building upon the business and agronomic knowledge that had been passed down. José's curiosity never ceases, as each harvest he works to improve his processing techniques and quality standards, and carefully experiments with new varieties to achieve a better and better cup.

Alongside José’s Pink Bourbon we are pleased to offer his Caturra variety this year. Caturra is a natural "dwarf" mutation of Bourbon that has been cultivated for many years and is one of the most common varieties among specialty coffee producers. Compared to the tall and lanky Bourbon, Caturra is a much smaller plant with fruit that is more tightly packed together on the branch, making it more productive and easier to pick.

We have bought Caturra from José in the past specifically for use as a component in Chit Chat. This particular micro-lot selection of the variety scored very high on the cupping table and bursts with juicy apple and cherry flavors, structured by a soft almond sweetness. We're excited to present this alongside the Pink Bourbon for a peek at how plant variety can impact flavor between two coffees from the same farm.

This is our second year buying from José Martinez Guzman. We scored this lot 87 points and purchased 6 35kg vacuum-sealed boxes for $5.75/lb EXW, on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.32/lb.
