Origin: Ecuador

Region: Imbabura

Locality: Ibarra

Farm Name: Habitat Forest

Producer: Mario Andres Andrade Morales

Altitude: 1700 - 1900 meters

Process: Washed

Variety: Bourbon

Tasting notes: Kiwi, concord grape, lime, vanilla

At Mario Andrade’s isolated 70 hectare farm only 10% of the land is planted with coffee. Large areas are made up of native forests, conserving a biodiverse environment for local plants and wildlife. The farm is so beautiful that the Andrade family sometimes rents it out for tourism and events. In the future they plan to build a hostel for travelers and ecotourists.  It seems fitting that they named the farm Habitat Forest.

Mario’s grandfather started growing coffee only for consumption on the farm by himself and his workers. As coffee production became more popular in the area his grandfather started selling it to domestic roasters. As coffee proved to be profitable the family invested more into their production. Mario now runs the family business and for the last three years has shifted the farm’s focus from commercial coffees to producing only high quality specialty coffee. This coffee tastes to us like kiwi, concord grape, lime, and vanilla.

Transparency: This is our first year buying from Mario Andrade, and our third year working directly with producers in Ecuador through our sourcing partners at Caravela Coffee. We scored this lot an 87 and purchased 6 35kg bags for $6.30/lb EXW, on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.20/lb.
