Kecho Anderacha is a milestone coffee for us. It’s the first release from a collection of lots that we selected during our first ever visit to Ethiopia in January 2024. A large portion of the coffee we buy annually comes from Ethiopia, and for years we’ve been working towards building relationships with producers from a distance through our trusted supply chain partners. But until this year we hadn’t yet been able to step foot on the ground, a crucial development for our work in any origin to deepen both our relationships and our understanding of each place’s unique challenges.

This coffee was produced by Mike Mamo, our primary partner in Ethiopia. Mike is a producer and exporter, the owner of two washing stations in the western region of Jimma and a dry mill in the capital Addis Ababa. In addition to producing and exporting his own coffee, Mike facilitates milling and export logistics for other producers. At his washing stations, Telila and Atoma, Mike buys ripe coffee cherries from local farmers, separates them by the kebele that the farm is located in, and manages fermentation and drying to the highest quality standards. Washed, honey, and dry processed coffees are produced at Telila and Atoma. This washed lot from growers in the Kecho Anderacha kebele is delicate and exceptionally clean. We think it tastes like oolong tea, kumquat, and apricot.

This is our third year buying from Mike Mamo and his Telila washing station through our importer Osito Coffee. We wrote a forward contract in February 2024 to buy 5 60kg bags of Kecho Anderacha Lot 1 for $4.95/lb FOT, on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.91/lb. We sampled this coffee at origin and scored it 87 points.
