Fazenda Recreio is a fifth-generation family farm, established all the way back in 1890, and currently owned by Homero Teixeira de Macedo Jr. and Maria Dias Teixeira de Macedo. However, it is their son, agricultural engineer Diogo Dias Teixeira de Macedo, who oversees operations today. Diogo has been working on the farm since 2000, learning about coffee production from his grandfather. Our experience with Fazenda Recreio is older than Carrier itself, when our Head of Coffee was a roaster in Los Angeles circa 2012 and had the opportunity to meet Diogo and work with a variety of his coffees. Just as it was all those years ago, Recreio coffee is known for its exceptional consistency and clean cup profile.
Another hallmark of Diogo’s work is his unwavering commitment to learning and experimenting with new ideas. Those coffees from fourteen years ago were so memorable largely because of the innovation behind them: exotic varieties separated into small micro-lots, and fermented with washed and honey processes that were uncommon in Brazil at the time. This commitment is perhaps best illustrated by Diogo’s illustrious track record of success in the Cup of Excellence, reaching the finals eleven times since 2001, including one 1st place finish.
This attention to specialty coffee innovation does nothing to distract Diogo from putting just as much emphasis on the traditional “bread and butter” of most Brazilian coffee farms: bulk lots of natural and pulp-natural coffee that are full-bodied, balanced, and cozy. Diogo’s in particular exude an uncommon elegance and refinement that makes them equally suitable as single origin coffees as they are for blending.
This dry natural processed lot is composed of Catuaí, Catucaí, and Yellow Bourbon varieties and tastes to us like strawberry, almond butter, and milk chocolate.
