We’ve been buying coffee from Ture Waji since 2019, when we first met him at a trade show in Boston through the introduction of a mutual friend. Ture was producing only dry processed coffees, of which we buy very little, but the samples we received were without a doubt some of the cleanest and most articulate examples we’d ever tasted from Ethiopia, or anywhere else for that matter. To this day we haven’t (yet) offered a dry processed coffee from anyone else in Ethiopia.

All of that changes this year, since not only are we adding some super clean dry Ethiopian coffees from other producers later this year, but we are also offering our very first washed coffee from Ture. This is only his second year producing washed coffee, for which he had to build a new washing station from the ground up. However, Ture is no stranger to the standards and best practices of washed coffee, and he brings to it the same obsession for detail and quality as he has always done for his dry coffees.

We tasted this coffee on a cupping table during our first ever trip to Ethiopia in January 2024, and had the opportunity to catch up with Ture as he personally dropped off a half dozen offer samples. We taste white tea, lemon, and strawberry candy.

This is our sixth year buying from Ture Waji of Sookoo Coffee through our importer Osito Coffee. We wrote a forward contract in February 2024 to buy 5 60kg bags for $5.25/lb FOT, on a day when the Coffee Commodity price was $1.91/lb. We cupped this offer at origin in January 2024 and scored it 87 points.
