Sanson Garcia Luna begins his workday at sunrise and does not end it until he’s checked everything off his list, even if he has to work late into the night. Part of the reason he must work so hard is because he owns and manages two separate small farms. Sanson takes advantage of having two farms by practicing judicious crop rotation and pruning, which avoids overworking his soil and plants to improve their long term health and productivity, while also raising quality. These projects come at the expense of lowering production yields for a harvest, but with careful planning and management he can count on the production of one farm to support his family while the other recovers.

Sanson’s farms are in San Vicente Yogondoy, the same community that produced our current Pluma de Oaxaca offering. Like other producers in Yogondoy, he uses a variety of native trees on his farm to provide shade, food, medicine, construction materials, and water collection. This type of care in crop management has allowed Sanson and other members of the community to realize annual increases in both yield and quality. Compared to Pluma de Oaxaca, which is a blend of coffees from different producers in Yogondoy, Sanson’s lot separation is brighter and juicier, with more pronounced fruit acidity and sweetness. We think it tastes like lime, honey, and brown sugar.

Transparency

This is our fifth year buying from producers in Oaxaca through our partners at Red Fox Coffee Merchants. We wrote a forward contract in February 2024 to buy 20 bags of Pluma coffee for $4.95/lb EXW. This was one of four different lots that we approved towards that contract. We scored it 86.75 points.
