Peru Altiplano is one of our signature single origin offerings, a label that we bring back each season to showcase the coffees that we feel best represent southern Peru’s “taste of place”. The Altiplano, or “high plain” in Spanish, is the Andean plateau, the roof of South America, and is a metaphor for the way we view the present and future of coffee in southern Peru.
This version of Altiplano was produced by forty coffee-producing families in the Tablahuasi community of Ocobamba, La Convencion, Cusco, Peru. Tablahuasi is an indigenous community which still preserves some customs and culture dating to the Inca period. Everyone in this community speaks Quechua as their first language. The average farm size is just 1 - 2 hectares per family, a small size which makes it difficult to earn a good living from coffee, even at a premium price. The families work extremely hard to improve both the quality and quantity of the coffee that they grow, in order to improve their incomes and the outlook for future generations. Still, the lack of economic opportunities for young people presents serious challenges for the future of this remote community.
This is our seventh year buying coffee from Peru through our partners at Red Fox Coffee Merchants. We bought 30 69kg bags of this lot for $3.85/lb EXW. We scored this coffee 86 points.
