This position will be responsible for managing operations at our Northfield café with the intention of fostering a thriving, vibrant, and functional shop environment while increasing sales performance. Reporting directly to the Head of Coffee Operations, this position oversees staff baristas at Carrier’s Northfield retail location. This position would be based in Northfield with occasional travel to our roasting facility in Waterbury or our café in Burlington for training and support. 

The Café Manager will maintain and uphold the current system for organization, bar flow, and customer service, as well as be in charge of new-hire orientation and training. This position would also take on the role of liaison between staff and owners, when appropriate. In general, the weekly schedule for this position would be the following:

  • Three scheduled shifts on the bar per week
  • Two shifts for “office hours” and administrative work
  • This balance of working shifts and dedicated administrative days is subject to change in the event of staff emergencies requiring the cafe manager to cover additional shifts on bar.

Café Manager Responsibilities Include:

  • Hire, train, and supervise café team members
  • Create weekly schedules, managing time off requests, and availability to cover shifts due to staff illness or other emergencies
  • Oversee supply inventory tracking and ordering, ensuring the process is efficient and maximizes budget
  • Work closely with production to ensure coffee is stocked and merchandised according to latest offering
  • Ensure customer service levels are met and exceeded 
  • Foster Carrier’s established culture of positivity and mutual respect

Café Manager Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Extensive knowledge of coffee bar flow and standards
  • Proven organizational, time management, communication, and customer service skills
  • Experience working in food services, hospitality, or related field

Some short term goals include: 

  • Establishing a more organized and streamlined inventory system; evaluate suppliers to ensure we’re maximizing our buying power
  • Conceiving and executing pop-ups at the café; as well as other business-boosting events/offerings
  • Emphasizing staff education/keeping staff current on coffee offerings
  • Instituting a bi-weekly check in with staff regarding their roles and wellbeing, to whatever extent appropriate

Long term goals include:

  • Helping to maintain staff investment, minimize staff turnover, and help support and enrich our staff's experience of working at Carrier
