Idido is a remote community in the Yirgacheffe region of southern Ethiopia, and is home to one of the oldest coffee growing traditions in the world. Farms are scattered around the rugged and mountainous terrain surrounding the town, with an average farm size of only one to two hectares and elevation between 1900 - 2200 meters above sea level. Farmers grow the Ethiopian landrace varieties Kurume, Daga, and Wolisho, and intercrop the plants with local native trees like false banana for shade and fertilization.
During the harvest, farmers deliver whole coffee cherry to the nearest collection center on dirt roads by motorcycle, horse, or donkey. From there, cherry is aggregated and delivered by truck to the central collection point in Idido. At the Idido washing station the cherry is sorted for ripeness and density, mechanically depulped, and fermented in open air tanks for 48 - 72 hours. After fermentation, the coffee is washed with clean water and spread out on raised beds to dry for four to five days.
This year’s crop of Idido is delicious, showcasing a classic Yirgacheffe profile of white flowers, black tea, and soft peach.
